This is a blatant callousness on the part of the school authorities. When it is reprehensible even when a child gets hurt inside school premises, it is shocking that two children died inside the school during school working hours. Were all the teachers and administrators dead or drunk?

I think the govt should take action and appoint an administrator in the school since the school authorities have failed in their duties. I haven't heard such an incident anywhere, even in US inner city schools, where most incident occur outside the school campus after school hours.

Maharishi student dies in school clash
By A Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, May 5 In a shocking incident that has exposed the growing lawlessness in educational institutions and a violent tendency among students, a Class X (Section A) student, Uddipta Sharma (15), of Maharishi Vidyamandir, Silpu-khuri, died following a fisticuffs with fellow students this afternoon. The incident occurred after Uddipta got involved in an altercation with Madhurjya Bora (Class X-A) after the latter had accused him of hiding the tiffin box of one of their classmates, Zaman. The argument soon turned violent and Uddipta ! was at the receiving end, as he was given a severe beating by several boys of the Madhurujya-Zaman group. All this happened during the tiffin hours after 12-30 pm. Around half an hour following the scuffle, Uddipta lost consciousness and was rushed to the nearby clinic of Dr Manik Dutta, from where he was referred to the Wintrobe Hospital, Ambari. He was declared brought dead at the hospital.

Meanwhile, angry parents and guardians have expressed shock at the incident, and said that the school authorities totally failed to maintain discipline and decorum at the school. They said a similar incident had occurred a few months back when a student died after he had been pushed from the staircase on the third floor of the school.

The vice-principal, Sujata Goswami, while terming todays incident as unfortunate, vehemently denied the earlier incident, saying that the boy fell on his own from the stairs and he was not pushed by any person. Pradeep Sharma, the father of the deceased and an employee with Guwahati Doordarshan, held the school authorities entirely responsible for the happening, and said that the teachers ought to have controlled the situation when the quarrel had erupted at first. In fact, as some students and guardians pointed out, one teacher made a mild intervention in the scuffle, but after had he left, the fight took a vicious turn. Uddiptas mother, Leena Devi, a teacher at the Panbazar Girls High School, was inconsolable and later she fainted.

Meanwhile, police has detained four students for interrogation, though no arrest has been made. No formal FIR has been lodged by the aggrieved party till the filing of the report.
