Dear Shantikam: I know, you know as much I know on this subject. Would you please comment what do you think on this. I am not interested what happened before; why even our Assamese CMDs for Oil India and ONGC never cared to ask the Ministry about it etc etc? The question is,  if there is anything you and us can intiate to do anything on this important subject, let us do it. Pensysvania, exploration for oil was started in Assam in 1866 by the visionary British pioneers. And lo and behold, in 1889, just 30 years later, the first oilwell in Asia was drilled in Digboi with make-shift drilling rig assisted by Assamese elephants. Since then Assam developed into one of the busiest oilfield in the world. Assam had been producing about 40% of India's oil. Today, both Oil India, ONGC and several private operating companies like Geo-Enpro and others operate in Assam. Assam has four oil refireneries Digboi, Noonmati, Numaligarh, Bongaigoan.  Sibsagar-Gaurisagar-Moran-Duliajan-Digboi corridor has the Asia's highest concetration of oil technocrates if not of Maruti cars. etc etc    Is there a more worthy candiate for a full fledged Petroleum Institute in India than Assam? I had been always questiong why Assam has not asked for a full fledged Petroleum Institute? Why Assam is not asking for it now?  At present Dibrugahr University has a Hobo Diok type of pathetic "Petroleum Engg Course".  What our litikai Kahrkhowa Assam MPs, MLAs and CM are doing all these years? Why the Assamese Media are not shouting and discussing about it instead of Gujarat Chief Minister's Visa or River Linking of Cavery river?  Why our youth donot spend some time in trying to know Assam instead of complaining without knowing what Assam wants? Why Assam does not have any NGO to discuss all these issues? Why ULFA is wasting ours and their time with a escapist mentality? Why? Why? Why?   A corollary to the above, is Assam thinking about preserving the first Oil Well or the Digboi oilfield itself as a Oil Museum?   Looks like we need a NGO in Assam to discuss Assam's interest in spite of Chandan.   This is not to say that I have anything against the following news!!!!   Pathetic!!!!   Rajen Barua -------------------------- Petroleum school for Amethi likely Source: IANS. Lucknow, May 8: Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar has urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to allot land for a petroleum training school in the constituency of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's son. In what is widely seen as a bid to please the Gandhi family, Aiyar flew down to Lucknow Saturday to meet Yadav to ask him to allot a chunk of land to set up a National Petroleum Training School in Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary constituency of Amethi. Yadav, reportedly, promised to comply with the request within a week. According to an Uttar Pradesh government spokesman: "The union petroleum ministry proposes to set up this institute in Trishundi village in the Bhadar block of Rae Bareli district, which falls in the Amethi parliamentrary constituency." The institute would train personnel in petroleum management-related issues for which Aiyar said there was ample demand in Saudi Arabia, Canada and Qatar. Amethi already has the Gas Pipeline Training Institute run by the Gas Authority of India.
