In www.bhaskar.com the local newspaper of Jaipur I read a news item which could have happened in USA also -- and perhaps in Jaipur only (in India).
A twenty year old, working in a cell phone company, was drunk in a remote restaurent at 11pm. Two school time guys happened to be there to get food for themsleves. Offered to take her home. In the car she smoked a ciggarrete and vomitted on the back seat. They took her to their centrally located house, where a student leader had reneted a room. Girl was stiil drunk. Student leader came with a gang. Drove away these two guys and tried to rape the girl. Police stopped the guys hurrying in their car and swooped down to save the half naked girl.
Lots of foreign tourists come to Jaipur and move on to Pushkar and Jaiselmer. Some of them are hippies and junkies, , some are motorbike riders, some carry AIDS -which they spread in remote areas.
Besides AIDS and drugs, there is another dimension of the psychological effect (I have done no formal research except through observation -which is also considered as a genuine research activity). . Having studied aong the most modern and most literate girls of India (at Delhi). The first Miss Universe from India -in 1994- was a neighbor and member(daughter) of one of my (girl) friend's Air Force family circle, another runner-up in Miss Universe was a classmate of my school time friend, whosew brother sponsored my loan to come to Harvard. So I can say that I have had the pleasure of being among the most glamorous circles -in the world.
However, when I saw the transformation among the Jaipur based girls towards modernity - I saw anelement which I did not like . They directly equated modernity to the kind of girls who came as tourists from the West. many from highly educated and globalized families - had a good world view -- some had the advatnage of having caring teachers with global perspective (perhaps inlcuding me). But many others were not so lucky. They now see the sex stuff on the internet. Read local reports about the sex antics of tourist girls, see them smoking and drinking in the hotels ----so this is part of being modern!!!
