I saw an advt today in Harvard Crimson Newspaper that Prof Diana Eck's directed project www.pluraism.org or http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~pluralsm/ --that tomorrow Sri Ravi Shankar of Art of Living is appearing here but i don't think I need to learn the art now. Last year in Feb while Iwas at Ahmedabad, returning from DwarkaDheesh - I had seen crowds coming after being at his gathering.

I don't think i can learn while being in a crowd.

Can u learn from books?

One explanation for this I think is because the Eastern Mythology or the Hindu Mythology is still connected with our religion and are very much a part of our day to day discussion and belief system. However in the West, the so called Mythology, say Greek or Roman Mythology, is a thing of the past, completely separated from their present religion.
To give an example, in India for instance, we still worship Hanuman or Ganesha and other mythological figures not to speak of Rama or Krishna all of whom are considered mythological characters from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

But in the West, they donot worship any of the mythological characters (say) Hercules or Olympiads or Titan etc.  In the West, they have declared their mythology as mythology, nothing to do with their present lives. But in India, our mythology is still very much a part of our lives.

This is my explanation.

Anjan-da,

Maybe your research topic was mythology in western faiths, but I don't hear generally people talking about mythology in Christainity of Islam --the way they spout openly about Hindu "myths"

Oh yes, we do.

Mythological and Archetypal criticism in literature looks at all mythologies including the above.  I did my Ph.D. on the subject and I should know.

You can read Northrop Frye's books on the subject especially The Great Code and The Secular Scripture.

Hi,

While reading this article I hit upon a familiar word - a surname of one of our top professors Diana Eck. http://www.eckankar.org/ This webiste reveals her interest in Eastern spirituality. Now I realize that perhaps her course titled "Hindu Mythology" is such becos she is able to differentiate (sift the grain from the chaff) from Indian/Hindu religious literature/practices--and not becos she is biased. She did nod her head favorably, on my comment in the seminar on "wfie abuse and faith" that all religions have mythical characeters (as per our current knowledge) then why single out non-Western faiths as "Hindy mythology".

Noone talks of mythology in Islam, Judaism or Christianity though.
