Many cosmopolitan cities in India have dropped the westernized version of city names. For example, the city council of Bombay renamed India's largest city Mumbai, after the Hindu goddess Mumbadevi.Madras became Chennai and Calcutta is now Kolkata. So has Calicut become Kozhikode. But there is some confusion here. Many top institutions have stuck with their old names. It's still Bombay High Court,Madras High Court,Calcutta High Court and Cochin High court.Wait, there are more--the Bombay Stock Exchange or the University of Madras kept their names for tradition's sake.Sometimes renaming proposals are triggered by misplaced ideas that old names are connected to colonial history.A couple of years ago,Bombay's, (sorry, Mumbai's) Laburnum Road was to be renamed due to the British ring to the name.Later,it was found out that it's a tree,Indian native laburnum trees that line the street!!!

In the city of Guwahati,it appears that the reverse is the true." Fasi Bazzar" became " Fancy Bazzar". Of late, " Narikol Bosti" is popularly known as " Coconut Avenue" ( in some circle)!!!

What's in a name then?
