River-link project rejected
OUR CORRESPONDENT
Jorhat, June 1: A proposal to link Dhansiri river with the
Brahmaputra, which the embankment and drainage department now claims
to be the only means to arrest erosion permanently along the banks in
Bokakhat subdivision, has been rejected by the government.

A river-linking plan worth Rs 50 lakh was submitted to the government
by the department recently but it was discarded since Rs 1 crore had
already been sanctioned for reconstruction of embankment in the area.

A major portion of the existing embankment in the Kurubahi area was
washed away during floods last year. The government sanctioned Rs 1
crore soon afterwards to rebuild the embankment. Officials from the
Bokakhat later concluded that only a river-link would permanently
solve the erosion problem.

The plan was, however, rejected, largely owing to lack of
co-ordination between various government departments.
