One of my sisters-in-law was in one of the contests for charity organized by the banker's association (if I remember correctly) in Houston a few years ago, and she missed to be the finalist as she spelt "check-books" as "cheque-books".
So sometimes it is to your disadvantage, if you know both - British and the American way of spelling a word :). The kids that are born and brought-up here would only (unless he/she is going to be a scholar and is interested in acquiring knowledge of anything and goes an extra mile to learn everything :)) know the American way of spelling these words.
