leading me up the platform to the Dean, taking over from the person whose turn it was initially to lead me. Her critiques and emotional support have been vital over the year.

I think for the first time the student  speaker on behalf of graduate students (from all schools Harvard law, Harvard MBA, Harvard Govt, Harvard Medical School , Harvard Divinity School and School of Education , Design School etc ) was Dorinda Carter, an African American from our School of Education. http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2005/06.09/19-oration.html

She was great (now going to be Asst. Prof at Michigan State Univ. )All our Ed. School batchmates then had a new enthusiasm. Many students had seemed  subdued among the MBAs , Doctors and Lawyers graduated alongside us as we had brushed shoulders while trying to get into the Tercentenary Theatre seating about 30,000 people thru small 10 feet lanes. It took us about 2 hours to walk the one mile. There were 3 times more parents than students just our Schools Annula Function in India. The Harvard Band and the Harvar-Radcliffe Choir were the stars perhaps the best college music teams in the world.

Thankfully the rain had stopped right at 6am just before we gathered at 7am for the Walk

In the confusion I had forgotten to shave (I had shaved two days ago only)and also to bring the childrens book (on Sharks) to wave at the ceremony. I borrowed one on Dogs from a doctoral student (now I have to return it)The Business School were waving countries flags many with Indian and US flags as well. Govt and Law school having inflated football shaped balloons with the globe on themwhich they threw up in the air , whenever their group was named. (photo: http://www.harvard.edu/) We waved our books and shrieked and stood up when Dorinda came to speak or when we were granted the diploma by President Summers. The student-teachers showed their international awareness by waving childrens books on exotic animals Cheetahs, Leopards etc not found in US.

The Harvard Univ. police moved around complete with pistols in the holsters and their Harley Davidsons. Im told by alums that they have the legal authority to fire and shoot as well as beat people black and blue just like the city police!!

The only hitch was when Summers mike did not work for a few moments when he spoke to award Diplomas to undergraduate students in his serious tone the way it has been said for 368 years at Harvard before this time. For the first time I saw men in tall black, shiny hats of Sherlock Holmes era and frock coats to further the age old tradition. I read that in the beginning the ceremony took place at the beginning of the school year to welcome them only many years later it was shifted   the end of the year to celebrate graduation.

It still beats me howeveras to how ALL students who survived till the end of the final semester were assumed to be able to graduate since till the very end noone told us our grades. We all dressed up and walked on the assumption that we would all graduate. Perhaps, it was due to the efforts our  Teaching Fellows who warned us and helped us improve if we had made a mess in any one of our papers rather than just failing us.
