The Dainik Asam (An Assam tribune publication) had published an editorial titled "Ulfar logot alochana kariboloy aase kito?" (What is there to discuss with ULFA?). In support of the editorial, I had sent a letter that was published recently. I am sending a translation of the letter for Assamnet members.

Sampadak Dangoriya:

Your editorial on 2nd June, "what is there to discuss with Ulfa" has touched ordinary readers like me along with those in intellectual quarters. I congratulate you for this timely editorial. In my opinion, through your editorial you have clearly stated what most sachetan Assamese think in this context.

Peace cannot be established through the barrel of a gun or by exploding explosives. We also do not desire to chase peace through these mediums. History also reminds us repeatedly about this. Only by creating a conducive environment through exchange of hearts, discussions and understanding, we can think of establishing peace. If Ulfa was genuinely interested in discussions, its sangram would have ended long ago. Many individuals, organisations have tried for years to make Ulfa sit with the Government for discussions. But every time, the organisation named Ulfa has found out some excuse to avoid the discussions process. This time also, when the discussions process has made some progress, the organisation has, as a precondition for discussion with the central government, demanded unconditional release of ten of its top leaders. This demand has again revealed the true saritra of the Ulfa. It is known to every one that the question of a precondition of releasing detained members cannot arise. Of the ten persons whose release has been demanded, there are no traces of three of them.  Therefore, even if the government agrees to the condition of releasing the detainees, it would not be able to do anything in case of the three and Ulfa would get a chance to wriggle out of the discussion process.

Today, every sachetan Assamese has become suspicious about the Ulfa organisation's existence, objectives, mission etc. A rebellious group like Ulfa is nothing but a non-government, illegal, commercial enterprise. Ulfa, which  is being nurtured in a country that is behaving detrimentally to India's interest and has forsaken any human responsibilities and thrives by smoking gunpowder, is a mercenary organisation. Due to this organisation, the Cinema industry is closing down in Assam. Many industrial and commercial organisations have been locked out. Persons like Sanjoy Ghosh, who was working selflessly to save Assam's heritage or foreign guest engineers have been murdered in the most obnoxious manner. The result is that in the world's eyes, Assam has become an avoidable region.

We have become suspicious of the motives of those who are trying to improve the image of such an organisation. An organisation's activities reflect its objectives. When we have tried to analyse Ulfa's actions with a cool mind, we have been faced with complexities. What ever may be its intentions, it is definite that its main objectives do not include giving priority to Assam or its interests.
