Hi,

A lot has been said about Nehru's faults but I would like to make a point that if it hadn't been fro Nehru's vision -which helped set up the IIT and IIMs etc --(and which have helped in BJP's India Shining-Feel Good campaigns) there would be no Indians being feted at NRI Meets in India and abroad.

The Indians abroad would still have consisted of indentured labor and their semi-literate/low skilled descendents --as in West Indies generally or Fiji or in Africa or even Canada to some extent.

It has been repeatedly stressed how the higher ed. institutions set up - thru Nehru's vision helped train Indian youth in World Class technical skills. I cannot imagine any BJP leader or even current Congress (run by Harvard and Cambridge dropouts - Gandhi family now) --to have the vision to tie up with Harvard Bus. School or MIT --for further training programs ---as Nehru did --for setting up of IIM-Ahmedabad and IIT-Kanpur.

Current need is for good school education -- and progressive nations like Sri Lanka , Pakistan, Gambia, Nigeria , Mexico, South Africa, Lebanon, Oman -- 20 such countries have sent their Edu. minitry officials --for an intensive 6 week program costing $8,500/person incl. everything --funded mainly by World Bank, USAID and other agencies --to Harvard Graduate School of Education. This Summer program has been going on for the past 15 years here-incl a tall Chinese professor -from Mongolia side of China (Dr. Hayen Hua). I haven't the least doubt that India  would never have participated in it in these 15 years -- though there are 2 guys from Pakistan and atleast one from Sri Lanka. India under Nehru might have tried to send somebody --but now BJP which its "we are the best" mantra --and Gandhi family whose scion Rahul never made the cut at Harvard --cannot allow "lower level govt officials" --to go for training to Harvard .

These guys at this program have really made me confused as to what career path I should choose. On the one hand - they present US education system and US research and teaching techniques -as a showcase -even taking the trainees to visit schools on overnioght trips.

On the other hand, there own indepth, quantitiave and qualitative research - in countries as far flung as Bolivia (latin America) and Georgia (near Russia) and China has helped initiate and sustain edu. programs in these nations. They say - that they want to put themselves out of the job --- by training people in the developing natioons -so that they don't have to go there later.

I find that given the Indian apathy to superior school edu. system -- I am burdened by the task which should have been done by many people. On the one hand, I would like to learn more about US school system - by learning by doing (teaching in it - or by US based research) --on the other --there is noone coming from Indian NGOs or ministries -to learn the macro stuff --with regression analysis, modelling etc  --so I should be there too.

So I am applying everywhere -- and getting more detailed info at each level.

Any suggestions?

Umesh
