AASU seeks release of ULFA leaders
By A Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, June 24 – The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today demanded that the Government should release the detained ULFA leaders to facilitate a negotiated settlement of the State’s vexed insurgency issue. In a statement here today, AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya welcomed the initiatives taken by noted litterateur Dr Mamoni Rosiom Goswami and said that the AASU and the people of the State were longing for a peaceful and permanent solution to the ULFA problem. Such a solution is possible through an effective negotiation between the Government and the militant outfit, he said.

But it is the duty of the Government to prepare the ground for such a negotiation through positive steps like the release of the detained ULFA leaders, Bhattacharyya said.

He blamed the Government as insincere alleging that the latter had be! en resorting to secretly killing the cadres of the outfit. The appeal for a negotiated settlement and secretly killing the outfit’s cadres cannot go simultaneously and the Government should immediately stop all such killings and create a favourable atmosphere for negotiation, he said.

Claiming that due to the lack of a constant political initiative on the part of the Government to settle the issue amicably, negotiation on the issue has remained elusive, Bhattacharyya also made an appeal to both the Government and the ULFA to abjure violence.
