Thanks to Priyankoo for introducing http://nivalink.com/assam/ to us. Just to think of it! While we’re languishing in budget holidays in Europe and elsewhere,  what a wonderful world waits us in surroundings more familiar to us! Who could dream of dining and wining at the  Burra Sahib’s bungalow in the midst of a real greenland a few years ago?

Except a  meal at the Wild Glass Resort  during  journeys  from Guwahati to Sivasagar I had never even heard of the other places except the Tripura Castle the existence of which of course would be no secret to anybody who had spent a lifetime at Shillong. But the Tripura Castle was not open to the public in those days.

Nor I had experience of a Rhino cruise. However, in the fifties I sailed a number of times in the Brahmaputra and the river Subansiri in steamers. But in those days I travelled in the Intermediate class, not  the First Class which was I suppose  the exclusive domain of the European planters and the like; a large part of the upper deck practically remained deserted whole of the year while the decks were crowded.

The G8 leaders’ meeting at Gleneagles and the UK’s successful bid to hold the Olympics in 2012 are the hottest topics of the day. While offering ‘Bottoms-up’ solutions to end poverty in Africa, one item that surfaced in the media also caught my attention. It was about tourism. It was described as an invaluable export in which Africa can excel. What the discerning tourist seeks today is adventure, scenery, wildlife, culture and tradition, the essence of the “ecotourism” agreed at the 2002 Johannesburg Earth Summit.  I am glad to surmise that our planners indeed know all about these.
