Hi,

For the past 3 days I have been struggling with this evry question. esp since yesterday morning when I was rudely awakened by a phonecall from a Teacher Job placement company I had applied to --saying that they cannot invite me to the July 7th Job fair at Baltimore near Washington DC since I am not a US citizen -even though I have permission to wrok here for one year.. I had already packed everything and was busy till 2am with that -and nearly dropped the idea of coming to DC. Just now I got another mail that the same company cannot consider me for another teaching position in Virginia near DC . I had checcked the School districts website last night --and found that they never mentioned that they require only US citzens.

I guess that teaching is like the creative side of marketing -- as in the article below -- and there are many takers in US. For research or analyticla skills - is what I have trained for at Harvard - so now I am really "driven" to get any position - even internship -- and I am not leaving out World Bank or any other organization --just becos it is consoidered anti-poor by some in the developing countries --as I again learnt at the Summer Program at Harvard's Internation Education Group a week back.

I guess all the H1 visa guys are all into analtyical stuff --and targetted at Blue collar jobs -which might draw union ire -- it seems school teaching is alos considered a blue collar job in US , India and elsewhere- has unions. India also does not allow foreigners to become govet teachers either , however.

However, I did take the Amtrack train yesterday , with 7 items of luggage - the porter said that a few of them weighed 100 pounds. Infact my biceps and abdomonal muscles and back are still aching from lifting and pulling the heavy luggage. However my heaviest stuff - the books  I had alreaddy sent by post - to a senior's address. It took me 3 trips to get the package weigh below 70 pound limit - had to take half the books out - I wonder what it weighed before! The post office was half a mile away and it was the hottest day of the season. Thankfully I found a tree with ripe mulburries growing in the graeyard - haging over the footpath -- God quenched my thirst and gave me something to eat.

More later.

Umesh

PS: Saw the US Capitol from the Union Station at DC - now realized why in "Mr Smith goes to Washington" - the hero ran to see that building after leaving the train station. It is exactly opposite the station. I ofcourse had too much luggage.
