July 13: A host of organizations and prominent personalities of the State have reacted sharply to the All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU)-sponsored Assam bandh on July 14 called in protest against the Supreme Courts verdict abrogating the controversial IM(DT) Act.
The State Government, on its part, has directed the heads of various departments to take necessary steps to ensure normal functioning of all Government offices and services during the bandh period, Government sources said.
Various organizations all over the State, including the All Assam Tai Ahom Students Union, the Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad, the All Assam Matak Yuba Chatra Sanmilani have vehemently opposed the bandh called by the AAMSU.
AJYCP president Pulak Choudhury, however, said that his organization was yet to take any decision regarding the bandh. He said, the minority community need not be panicked in the aftermath of the apex court verdict. Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind spokesperson Hafiz Basir Ahmed, when contacted by The Sentinel, said the Jamiat is neither going to support nor oppose the bandh.
Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad president Brajen Kakati has termed the bandh call as unjustified. "The AAMSU has no moral rights to call the bandh," he said.
UMF president Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury told our Dibrugarh correspondent that the minority students body had sought its support to the bandh. "We have made it clear to them that if the bandh is against the Supreme Courts verdict, the UMF will not be part of it. We will, however, consider if the bandh has been called in protest against the alleged betrayal to the minorities by the Congress," he said.
Noted public activist Deven Dutta, while talking to The Sentinel, said that he is always against the bandh culture and the cause for which the AAMSU has called for an Assam bandh can never be supported. "The call for a bandh in the present context is totally unjustified," he said.
The bandh has been opposed by various personalities and organizations of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Jorhat and Nagaon as well.
