SHILLONG, July 16: The Meghalaya Government has alerted its border outposts to check possible infiltration of suspected Bangladeshis into the State from Assam following the striking down of IM(DT) Act by the Supreme Court.
Superintendent of Police (Infiltration) L B S Rapthap told The Sentinel today that a large number of infiltrators were detected and pushed back to Assam. He said that all checkposts of the State, especially those along the Assam border, were asked to check the antecedents of the passengers of vehicles entering the State from Assam. "We apprehend lots of (minority) people coming to Meghalaya for shelter." The SP said that during the recent SMS campaign against suspected Bangladeshis in upper Assam, a large number of people of suspected nationalities had attempted to enter Meghalaya.
