Hi,

In spare time I have been reading some love stories in DC's MLK Public library - in an effort to understand the female psyche in US. Ofcourse the themes have changed since Mills and Boon's romance novels -- to include cyber porn hungry husbands, casual sex for hooking up --

but there was this novel ("Hunter's Woman" by Ms Linday ..) which was about a female doctor going to Amazon jungles to fight bioterrorism (in form of Anthrax virus/bacteria spores thrown from air upon hapless Indian tribals by money hungry Brazilian miners, planters etc.)

Incidently, the story revolved around her getting close to her separated husband who had deserted her 10 years ago to go on a US Marine military expedition - leaving her 20 years old and pregnant and leading to miscarriage and intense phsical and mental pain suffered by her. In his second chance - he began to realize how intense was her suffering and that he should never never do it again. It is very useful for men to put themselves in the shoes of women - and experience a kind of pain they would never feel - except when they become impotent or blind
or paralyzed. My own version was that women feel - when somehow there is a miscarriage or still-born child that a part of their inner flesh has become dead and the dreams they had for the future based on this "part of their flesh" are shattered. As an analogy - an athlete who learns that he can run no more etc.

From that logic - ALL women would be extremely reluctant to kill their unborn child - or go for abortion - but it seems there are incresing number of "modern" women who really want the freedom to kill their unborn child. Why would any sane person do that?

My own experiences with abortion have been limited to seeing - as a child - the female dog (bitch - from the Naga dog couple my father had brough from Nagaland - the dog died early on) in our household being given a thorough vaginal wash with a garden water pipe - after she ran away -in the mating season in monsoons-- cutting the rope which tied her with her teeth -- we children chased her - and caught her before any damage was done. But sometimes we little guys had to "separate" the bitch from the dog or were too late. After many unwanted  litters the vet advised that we use the hose pipe method to avoid getting our "bitvh" pregnant.

Now I learn that a similar method is used for human females' abortion as well-atleast in early stages.

So when is such abortion good and just?

I would say that the hose pipe method - for early pregnancy - is the best. If someone did unsafe sex - and needed to get herself cleared up (in Gujarat - after Navratra all night dance fest in October a marked increase in abortions is reported) as in drunken sex or "hooking up " --and did not use the pill etc - use the hose pipe.

Second, if ultrasound tests declared that the child will be deformed or brain dead etc - such pregnancy can be terminated - with such justification or when a woman was raped and became pregnant and ofcourse doen't want the child etc.

Or when mother was tested HIV or STD positive after she beacme pregnant etc.

-------------------------------------

Other than that I do not see any reason in allowing some callous female to terminate her pregnancy in a late stage - where the child feels the pain (and the mother does not feel any love for her child.)

On the other hand, forcible ban on abortions would lead to China like situation (see National Geographic's China's Lost girls) where due to one child policy - every year 100,000 new born girls are left out by their parents - and now being adopted by Westerners.

What is the solution? - you tell me

Umesh
