SRINAGAR: Being in the wrong place at the wrong time cost four boys
their lives as security forces mistook them for militants and killed
them in the early hours of Sunday in the border district of Kupwara
in north Kashmir.
While police sources maintained that three boys were killed and one
was injured, sources said the fourth boy also succumbed in the
hospital in the afternoon.
The state government ordered a magisterial probe. The victims were
identified as Bilal Ahmed Shah (13), Waseem Ahmed Wani (8), Shabir
Ahmed Shah (14) and Manzoor Ahmed Shah (16).
The incident sparked widespread protests. Scores of people from
Wilgam, Bagargund and other adjoining areas took to.the streets to
express their resentment.
Protesters pelted stones on Tregham and Wilgam police stations,
fought pitched battles with cops and burnt down a computer lab and
tailoring centre set up by the Army. The situation remained tense as
people refused to bury the victims.
According to reports, troops fired on a group of boys near Bagargund
bridge at around 1.30 am, when they were going to ease themselves in
the fields. They were guests at a marriage party in the village.
Sources said a patrolling party of 6 Rashtirya Rifles, which had
laid an ambush under the bridge, suspected the boys to be militants
and opened fire. Kupwara police chief Sunit Dutt said the ambush was
laid as the area is considered "highly sensitive".
Ghulam Ahmed Shah, whose son's wedding was in progress when the
shooting took place, said they heard a grenade blast and sounds of
firing at 2 am.
At around 4 am, soldiers from the nearby Army camp informed them
that their guests have been killed in the shootout, he said.
