In some respect, your needs are extraordinary because it
appears that you use conditional HLASM not simply to
generate machine code, but also as a general purpose
interpretive language, much as I use Rexx or POSIX shell
to manufacture JCL (I try not to touch the stuff with my
bare hands.)

Your closing characterization was gratuitous; potentially
counterproductive.  Jonathan's measured followup does him
credit.
