No John, it is not a PC/Unix/Linux conspiracy I posses a book that was published on 2006 by Gabe Gargiulo and it is NOT the first version of that book (and it is not a hard-to-read manual from IBM, just a common basic book for self learning of Rexx.) The name of this book it "The Rexx Language on TSO". On page 160, the author put in a frame (for extra emphasis:) and here is what Gabe says in simple English:
The devious '*' "EXECIO * DISKW OUTFILE" I've seen an * used in writing. I do not use it, because it requires a null line to signify 'end of file'. What if you wanted to write a null line? You wouldn't be able to. The issue of '*' in EXECIO DISKW is well known, well documented and is problematic for few reasons, but I think Gabe summarized it from both ends, if you use '*', you both need a null line lest Rexx won't know were to stop... and you cannot print an empty line (i.e. length 0). Unfortunately, with the new crowd of pc-minted programmers taking over in the mainframe realm, we are likely to see more and more datasets with the accursed null string in it. -------------------------------------------- On Wed, 4/2/14, Automatic digest processor <lists...@listserv.uga.edu> wrote: Subject: ASSEMBLER-LIST Digest - 1 Apr 2014 to 2 Apr 2014 (#2014-62) To: "Recipients of ASSEMBLER-LIST digests" <ASSEMBLER-LIST@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU> Date: Wednesday, April 2, 2014, 11:01 PM ASSEMBLER-LIST Digest - 1 Apr 2014 to 2 Apr 2014 (#2014-62) LISTSERV at the University of Georgia ASSEMBLER-LIST Digest - 1 Apr 2014 to 2 Apr 2014 (#2014-62) Table of contents: PTF level in SYSPRINT (6) CPU Measurement Facility Documentation (2) Rexx substr not retiring string PTF level in SYSPRINT PTF level in SYSPRINT (04/02) From: Sharuff Morsa3 <sharuff_mo...@uk.ibm.com> Re: PTF level in SYSPRINT (04/02) From: Jonathan Scott <jonathan_sc...@vnet.ibm.com> Re: PTF level in SYSPRINT (04/02) From: John Gilmore <jwgli...@gmail.com> Re: PTF level in SYSPRINT (04/02) From: Paul Gilmartin <paulgboul...@aim.com> Re: PTF level in SYSPRINT (04/02) From: Tony Harminc <t...@harminc.com> Re: PTF level in SYSPRINT (04/02) From: John Gilmore <jwgli...@gmail.com> CPU Measurement Facility Documentation CPU Measurement Facility Documentation (04/02) From: Rob van der Heij <rvdh...@gmail.com> Re: CPU Measurement Facility Documentation (04/02) From: Martin Truebner <mar...@pi-sysprog.de> Rexx substr not retiring string Re: Rexx substr not retiring string (04/02) From: Bob Raicer <r...@raicer.com> Browse the ASSEMBLER-LIST online archives.
