Tonight I did some further testing. I tried switching the DBdriver to an
ODBC (MSODBCSQL11), SQL Server (SQLSRV32) and ODBC Native Client
(SQLNCLI10) - all of them continue to show the database time warnings
when used, the same as the ADO type.

Looking at the mail server run tonight at 11:30 pm, the usage is very
low, maybe one message processed every six seconds. The server CPU and
disk usage is very low, almost zero. The SQL Server performance values
are also near zero - basically the server is pretty much idling. Yet I
am still seeing these warnings where database connections are taking 5,
7, sometimes as much as 20 seconds.

It's clear that whenever these database connections are being attempted,
that ASSP is blocking, which is what is causing the whole thing to come
to a screeching halt. I'm starting to think that there is another issue
- a threading issue perhaps, where a thread is blocking when a database
connection is opened - and it is not the database itself that is causing
the delay, but something else blocking within ASSP.
