Ah, yes, I was talking about normal perl, not the custom ActivePerl which 
may work better. I don't use windows so I don't know. If it does work - 
fantastic! Kudos to jan, gozer and the rest of the activestate (they are a 
few blocks away from us). Unfortunately memory allocation approach used on 
windows is quite different than on the rest of the platforms perl runs on. 
One day perl will adopt ActivePerl's model.

Yup, every time you start a new thread it copies *all* data (it only 
shares the opcodes tree), because there is no copy-on-write in 5.8 (added 
in 5.9 partially). So essentially startup of new threads under heavy 
module utilisation is not scalable, as it may take like 30 seconds to 
start a new thread on a heavily loaded machine.

Though I can tell that people need to start using threads, because 
otherwise problems aren't going to be fixed. But it's a chicken and an egg 
problem, since most people find them unusable to start with... hoping that 
perl6 will have it right.
