I think I’m running 1.2.3.  How would I tell.  I’m a total ASSP noob.  The description that you have written below exactly matches mine.  I have 125 in this field and it works great in so far as my users being able to authenticate.

If I switch it to one of my domain’s IPs OR if I set it to the mail server’s nic IP the users can’t authenticate but response messages to the email interface are successful.

If I put in only a port, then my users can authenticate but ASSP starts failing when trying to send responses to messages to the email interface.

Which version are you running?  Here is the description in the current BETA:

The address:port of your message handling system's smtp server.
If only the port is entered, or the keyword __INBOUND__:port is used, then the connection will be established to the same IP where the connection was received. This is usefull when you have several IPs with different domains/profiles in your MTA.
Examples: "127.0.0.1:125", "10.0.1.3", "10.0.1.3:1025", "__INBOUND__:125", "125", etc.

I have only the port in smtpDestination.  When I actually put an address in

SmarterMail and it is setup so that each individual domain has its own IP
address; not a single address that they all work with.

It would be a very nice addition to the software if you had a separate line
item for the outbound smtp server.
