I agree. One of the fundamental reasons for ASSP's appeal is its simplistic reliance on Perl and a minimal amount of modules. If I remember correctly, it originally was advertised as requiring none! Of course it was only a Bayesian filter then... :-) dig should certainly be available for any platform, so I assume that it should not be a tremendous inconvenience - but I do worry about syntax related issues that I have found to not always be cross-platform compatible. Although I am interested in knowing how well dig performs compared to Net::DNS, I believe there are things you can do to increase the performance of Net::DNS - such as localizing certain bits of code. I'm afraid I cannot recall the full details off-hand (I'm going to go search), but I am quite sure I read this on one of the official sites for the module.
