Hi, Corwin --

Well, since my SMTP Server has port 25 (normal SMTP in/out )
changed to 125, it "listens" to ASSP on 125 and also tries
to send via 125. Only one application per machine can
use port 25, right? Our router forwards port 25 to our server,
which ASSP is now listening on port 25.

I guess I'm confused, and ASSP will have to go the way of the DODO
for our application, which is a shame because it works great other
than this one (small?) problem.

Thanks for your help!
Bryan

No. ASSP is not an MTA. It doesn't know anything about SMTP protocol. It
is designed to PROXY mail from one MTA or process to another MTA. I'm
not sure what you mean SLMail has no way to send SMTP messages via port
125. Is SLMail an MTA or an MDA or both?

Our configuration is as follows:

ASSP Listens on port 25 and proxys it's connection to ClamSMTPD on port
10025 which proxys to sendmail on port 325. Sendmail looks at the email
and if it destined for @ghpud.org it forwards it to our exchange server,
otherwise it looks up the destination MX and forwards it to that server.

In it's simplest config (without ClamSMTPD) ASSP listens on port 25 and
proxys its connection to localhost port 325 (Sendmail). Sendmail is the
MTA and determines where to deliver the message. If an application acts
as an MTA it becomes responsible for conforming to RFC2821.

By the way, I'm running ASSP on the same PC as my mail server. ASSP has
control of port
25 (inbound, and by inference, outbound).

SLMail has its SMTP port set to 125, and ASSP feeds incoming mail to
that port.

SLMail has no way to send SMTP messages via port 25 so they are sent to
port 125.
Shouldn't ASSP know to pass these out the
gateway?

Thanks!

Thanks, Corwin --

Yes, it does deliver local mail just fine, just not the external mail.

>From what I can see is that it does try and retry,
but since the SMTP port is 125 it gets redirected back to itself from
ASSP.

Hmm...I'm not familiar with SLMail at all but it sounds like you need to
configure it to deliver mail to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' locally and anything
else it delivers to the destination MX. I'm going to guess that it is
trying to deliver the external destination email back to itself.

You should be able to look in your ASSP maillog.txt and your SLMail logs
to trace the flow the email is taking.

Any SLMail gurus have a suggestion?

I'm using SLMail.

I changed the SMTP port to 125, so ASSP sends external
email to my server through that port. However, my server
is also trying to send outbound email through that port (I only have the
one setting to change).

Well ASSP doesn't actually relay mail as it is not an MTA it is an SMTP
Proxy. It hands mail off to your MTA (sendmail? Qmail? Exchange?). I
would suspect a misconfiguration on your MTA is what is preventing
non-local email relaying.

To what MTA are you having ASSP hand off e-mail?

I followed the checklist on the wikki...

Yes, I can telnet to my mail server through ASSP Local mail gets
delivered, but mail to an external recipient does not get delivered.

Yes, external mail comes to me, and I see spam, delaying, etc. all
working in the logs.

ASSP just doesn't relay mail to external recipients.

Thanks in advance!
