I did that w/o changing ASSP; just a matter of setting up stunnel (www.stunnel.org) to listen on the needed ports and forward to ASSP (or to the POP3 or IMAP ports); sure, it will just be a plain vanilla SSL connection, but sometimes it may be useful as well :)
