Your reference above is from an older 2012-08-01 release.
I referenced the later (and roughly current) 2014-12-24 beta release.

It looks like the code was changed in between those times.

The latest code from AT&T Research was also the 2014 release (as far as
I know), and shows the same as the code I referenced on GIT. So it looks
like the newer code was introduced at AT&T Research before December
2014.

I just just looked back at the AT&T Research code from December 2014
and, for what it is worth, the file 'rsmerge.c' was last changed on
2013-05-09.

As an extra, the version which you referenced (from the 2012 release)
has the 'rsmerge.c' file dated as 2011-09-27.

But it looks like the latest code (which I originally referenced)
has been the same for a few years now (looks like since 2013-05-09).
