misperceptions that makes people not want to contribute back to open
source projects.  Digium does NOT have a copyright on the codebase.

100% correct, my mistake. You're perfectly right to rant, it's important to get the licensing facts right. There's a big difference on who's got the copyright and the license to use the product.
