Look at the ifcfg-* files under /etc/sysconfig/network. There should be one for each of your interfaces. Add a persistent name to each of them like so: PERSISTENT_NAME='external' Call them whatever you want. Good choices are 'external', 'internal', etc. Now instead of eth0 and eth1 you have more logical names that will always refer to the same interfaces no matter which order they came up in.
