Fun fact: short of buying a 10gigE card, your best performance will probably be from a cheap desktop board with Intel's on-board GigE chip connected via the "CSA" bus. It bypasses the PCI bus entirely and drops packets straight onto the north bridge; this gives it a surprisingly large performance boost. Only Intel would make its cheapest board outperform its more expensive server-grade solutions. :-)

In general, Intel's GigE cards are pretty good, and they're under $50. It's hard to justify buying anything cheaper when you care about performance and reliability.
