That script requires running it as root. Why not use Asterisk::Manager and connect to the manager interface? The script would also be much more efficient. If you find Asterisk::Manager from asterisk-perl (http://asterisk/gnuinter.net ) to be broken, let me know and I'll send you my up-to-date version.
