This may sound strange.... But a good external echo canceller is a VOIP provider like Vonage.
On my home system, I can tweak all I want and I cant kill the echo on my pots line, but my VOIP line from Vonage does eliminate most if not all of it for me regardless of the * settings! Strange but true....
