I haven't read every message in this thread so I apologize if this is a repeat. Have you considered using the cfg files and an ftp server to configure the phones? I have found it to be very convenient as a way to manage many phones spread out across several locations as well as maintaining one or two phones.

For instance, it takes several minutes to boot up, apply any changes via the web interface takes at least a minute, etc. Is this normal behaviour? Is there anything that can be done about it?
