Given that this is basically a Red Hat Enterprise Linux box I would follow the way RH does their rpms: - remove the -O3 or any other -O settings - stick $(RPM_OPT_FLAGS) in the CFLAGS line which had the -O3 in it so rpm can decide which flags to use Maybe you need to remove more -f flags. Don't know, my Makefile sourcery is limited.
