Hey Mick, which version of asterisk are you using ? I've experienced problems after 1.2.8 with app_sms.so. It seams that the application is sending out an sms to the center. But this message was never recieved by my cellphone.
To solve the problem i compiled app_sms.so from 1.2.7.1 source tree and moved it into the modules directory. Someone should contact a developer for that - since I experienced the problem I did not have time to track the problem down to it's origin. Hope this helps!
