Thanks Russell, that's been bugging for a couple of days now. Flite is pretty wicked, you don't' have to preprocess a text file now, you simply give it the text to speak and you're done. I first read about it here:

Your problem is the format of your call file. Your "application" and
"data" lines should read:
application: Flite
data: "Wake me up"
