You either add spandsp, and a couple of very simple interface apps -rxfax and txfax - directly into Asterisk, or you use spandsp/iaxmodem/hylafax+ over an IAX link. The former has issues, if you use G.729, as spandsp is GPL software. Using a program over an IAX limit gets around that.
