Scott, I had the same problem when I downloaded http://downloads.digium.com/pub/asterisk/asterisk-1.6-current.tar.gz This downloaded asterisk-1.6.0.2.tar.gz To fix the problem I downloaded http://downloads.digium.com/pub/asterisk/asterisk-1.6.0.3-rc1.tar.gz and I was able to compile without any problems.
