Do you have any additional, "soft" network interfaces defined? For example, have you enabled OpenVPN, and thus loaded either the "tap" or "tun" network-interface drivers? Do you have an IPv6-over-IPv4 tunnel defined (and thus loaded the "sit" driver)? Note that "ifconfig" will not necessarily show all of your interfaces (hard- or soft-) - only the active, configured ones. Take a look at /proc/net/dev and see if anything shows up, which ought not to. Also, check the "ifconfig" for each interface, and see if the HwAddr is exactly what you would expect.
