I would recommend you to use the binary packages. Method described here: https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/Asterisk+Packages#AsteriskPackages-YUM%28CentOS%2FRedHat%29
They are reliable, easy to maintain, and this is basically one of the best way to get a clean Asterisk Installation.
NOTE: Zaptel was renamed to Dahdi a long time ago, and after that, there have been several improvement and fixes to it.
