Steve, Apology accepted. As I said in the original post, I hold you in high regard so your criticism was hard to take. I still think that the trade- off between readability and optimization is up for debate, but it's certainly nothing to hold a grudge over.
I can tell you one thing for certain: I will think of you and that Bash substring-extraction construct every time I even consider piping something to cut. I might even remember that particular syntax without resorting to the ABS. I'm not making any promises about the others, though.
