Sure. You can use Asterisk as a VoIP gateway to your existing legacy PBX. You can't plug Lucent's (Avaya's) DCP, MLX, or ATL phone sets into an Asterisk box -- the protocols are all proprietary. But you can certainly connect between the systems using analog or T1/Ei connections.
