When  doing that it created a shortcut called linux in the /usr/src   directory

Going in zaptel-1.0.2   and doing a make linux286    I get the same message   Link /usr/src/linux-2.6 to your kernel sources first!
Should I have a dir in /usr/src called  linux-2.6 ???  the only linux directory there is a linux-2.6.4   and a shortcut called linux just created by the command you mention I believe...

That last line right there should be the clue:

ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.4-52 /usr/src/linux

then do the make, make install stuff.
