I answer your question with more specificity....NO, Asterisk does not
have to stay in the loop on IAX2 connections. This is determined by the
"notransfer" parameter in the iax.conf file. That said, * will stay in
the stream when your server connects to an ITSP that invokes a trunking
mode with the IAX2 connection. I'm told that this is determined at the
far end, and that if your connection is preceived as at port 8617 on
your server then you are in trunking mode.

Trunking mode saves overhead by agregating multiple calls into one
connection. As such * must remain in stream to break out the calls at
the end point.
