Asterisk & SER are (more or less) SIP servers  and Jabber is a completly different protocol.  There are no relation between jabber and Asterisk/SER.

Jabber provides Instant Messaging and Presence and SIP also provide that funtionality and includes general session management (for example for telephony or videoconference).

If you want Instant Messaging with jabber you can user Jabberd server.  If you want Instant Messaging with SIP you can use SER.    SER includes a gateway for interoperability with jabber servers (convert SIP messages in Jabber messages), but usually you don't need it.

Asterisk is not oriented to instant messaging and presence, it's oriented to telephony and telephony services.

In a typical instant messaging deployment you can use Jabber because it's more extended than SIP today for that purpouse.  In a typical telephony/videoconference deployment you can use SER/Asterisk, and also provide basic instant messaging and presence.

I hope these comments help you.

Asunto: [Asterisk-Users] Asterisk, SER & Jabber

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could explain the relationship of Asterisk, SER & Jabber (XMPP) to me.

I understand that there are facilities within Asterisk to use jabber to notify of incoming calls via XMPP clients, however I’m trying to work out exactly where the SER server would sit in all of this and what it’s actual role would be.

This might seem like a silly question, I’m pretty new to all this and I’m still trying to get my head around it.

What are the common uses for the SER server ?  Why would someone choose to use the SER server over asterisk alone ?

How does it integrate with jabber ?

I’ve spent some time looking over the information on voip-info and at the iptel site, but it’s still not becoming clear to me.

Can someone give me a real world example of where they might use this and why ?

Any info would be appreciated at this stage.

Thanks,

Callum
