apache is NOT required to make PHP 'work'.... PHP is most commonly used in web pages, which are generally using some web server (like apache) to serve them to the browser, however, PHP is a scripting language just like perl/bash/etc... It is perfectly plausible to use PHP to write a CLI based script.
