yes fax detection works great in asterisk but keep in mind the incomming lines
have to support fax tones etc.. ie you cannont have a sip trunk forward by a
terminator and have hopes of getting a fax on it.. if you have a pri or
regular
pstn lines no worriies :)
its good to add ringing(3) in your incomming dial rule so that it has enought
time to decern the fax tone, other than that should work fine.
Note * big not ... spandsp is a little broken in 1.2(as in dosnt compile nicly
like in 1.0.9) (im currently fixing mine) so check the documents on the voip
wiki for the lines in the c code to change.

Quoting John Van Ostrand <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
Hi All,
This may be a tough one...
I have a customer who has a Voitel system with PRI trunks and about 100
users. The owner *insists* on having a single DID for each user that
detects incoming voice and fax calls and routes them differently. We
want to propose a Hylafax solution to accept the fax calls.
His Voitel people say that they cannot do it with his equipment.
Would it work if I:
1. Put an Asterisk box between his telco and the voitel.
2. Have Asterisk answer the call, perform fax detection.
3. If the call is not a fax: Send call (including DID, callerID, etc
information) to the Voitel system via a second PRI card
4. If the call is a fax: Send the call to Hylafax.
Does the fax detect work reliably enough?
What is the typical delay in for fax detection?
What would the caller hear?
How many faxes are out there that don't send the initial tone?
Has anyone done the PRI sharing with Hylafax (is that CAPI?) In other
words can hylafax "take-over" a pri channel after asterisk has
determined it's a fax call.
Thanks
