There is a voicemail profile in MIME.
SMTP *is* the appropriate protocol for communications of voicemail.
(Assume 8-bit-clean SMTP and Content-Length: encoding, and there is no
real overhead)
Asterisk already knows how to punt voice mail to SMTP, it just can't
receive it. You MIGHT want to run it another port (not 25).
You probably want the two * to communicate the appropriate port (and
IP) in IAX2, because one end might be behind a NAT, and might be opening
connections with uPNP or STUN or ...
You can offload most of the work, however to something like postfix!
This gets you queuing as well.
You could also pull emails with fetchmail.
(You might want to look at UUCP-over-TCP as well. It also gets you
queueing, and is a more file oriented connection than SMTP)
If you add the ability to receive voicemail from email into the
voicemail box, of course, you'll want to be able to delete voicemail
from the inbox by smtp... now that is what many of us want.
