You can already do this with just the free VMPlayer. Just takes a little work to do but is relatively simple. And yes makes it real easy to build test systems. What I do is make a base clean install, say Centos 4.2 or Ubuntu Server and then make a copy of the directory, then do application installs to the new image. If I don;t like what I got , delete and make a new copy. Or as you progress you can shutdown and make a copy so as to have a snapshot before another package is installed.
