Gmail is the absolute greatest tool for mailing lists. I just subscribe, have them filtered into their own Label, and make it skip the Inbox, then when I feel like reading a thread, I do. I actually don't mind being on mailing lists again, it's like those early days of email where you really only knew three people who had it, so you needed the mailing lists to keep your inbox in bold.
