If you want cheap (I'm about as Scottish as they get), I've been using NT
handsets from Centrex phones, with a converter box. I was busting open
defunct handsets and salvaging the 4 bin jack but I found them surplus in
Montreal. You use a mini stereo extension cable on the other side of the little
black box, cut in half. The wiring is fairly simple: one cable for headset,
one
for mic, plugged into your notebook sound jacks or whatever sound card.
The "hot" leads (not ground) for each are tied together in the box. Trick is
to
cut out the extra diode on the jack PCB, and watch the polarity of the mic. If
it doesn't work try reversing the mic wires. Any handset that I get off of an
old fax machine seems to have the opposite polarity so avoid those unless
you want to rewire the handset.

You can also plug one of the Plantronics headset amplifiers into one of these
if you want. Makes for more wiring though.
